The New York-based modern dance company Mark Morris Dance Group will be stopping in Tucson as they’re touring with their show, “The Look of Love.”
The performance will take place on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University Blvd.
“I’ve been a choreographer professionally for 40-something years,” said artistic director and choreographer Mark Morris. “I don’t wait to be inspired by something but I choose music and decide what to do.”
“The Look of Love” is all choreographed to music by composer and songwriter Burt Bacharach, arranged by Ethan Iverson.
Morris said the music will be played live by an ensemble of three singers and four instrumentalists playing the piano, bass, trumpet and drums.
The lead vocalist is Broadway actress and singer Marcy Harriell, who has been in musicals such as “Rent” and “In the Heights.”
“Their arrangements were done with full knowledge and approval of Mr. Bacharach. We worked with him on Zoom and he came to see the final dress rehearsal. This was mid-Covid,” Morris said. “So, he came and saw the show and gave it his support and we were so delighted. And you know, he died a few months later.”
Morris said they had “very little work” during the pandemic but they’ve been able to tour and perform more over the years. “The Look of Love” will be performed by 10 dancers and is an hour long.
“I’m not trying to teach anybody any lessons or heal them or anything,” Morris said. “It’s just a wonderful show with great dancers and musicians. And I want everybody to love it.”
