Hobbs: Flags to half-staff Monday in memory of Az House Speaker Jim Weiers

Gov. Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday in memory of former Arizona State House Speaker Jim Weiers, who died on Friday.

Weiers served in both chambers of the Legislature, with terms between 1994 and 2013. He was speaker of the House from 1991-2001 and 2005-2009.

The Republican politician was “an engaging storyteller with a heart for servant leadership,” a statement from Hobbs’ office said.

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Speaker Weiers, a man who worked tirelessly for his community and who was a champion of maintaining positive bipartisan relationships in order to better serve the people of Arizona,” Hobbs said. “Our thoughts are with his wife Gina and his entire family during this difficult time. I have ordered flags to fly at half-staff on Monday and on the day of his interment to honor his life and legacy.”

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to join in this tribute, officials said.
