Fun events happening around Tucson this summer

It may be nearing 110 degrees outside but that doesn’t mean there’s no fun to be had. From themed nights at the zoo to an outdoor roller disco, there’s something for everyone as summertime rolls into Tucson.

COX Movies in the Park

  • Where: Reid Park DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center, 900 S. Randolph Way
  • When: Friday, June 7 and Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m.

The COX Movies in the Park events are free and suitable for the whole family. The pre-showing entertainment starts at 6 p.m., which includes games, prizes and acts by local performers. There will also be food trucks on site. The movie showing begins at 7:45 p.m. “Wish” will be screened on Friday, June 7 and “Trolls Band Together” will be screened on Friday, June 21.

Summer Safari Nights

  • Where: Reid Park Zoo, 1100 S. Randolph Way.
  • When: Running currently until Saturday, Aug. 10 at 6-8p.m.

Summer Safari Nights give people the chance to visit the zoo in the evening when it’s a bit cooler. Each Saturday until August 10 will have a different theme ranging from bears, South American animals and more. There will be music, activities, keeper chats – all accessible to everyone with the ticket. Tickets for adults are $10.50, for seniors $8.50, for children $6.50 and children under 2 go in for free.

Going It Alone

  • Where: Invisible Theatre, 1400 N. 1st Ave.
  • When: Thursday, June 6 to Sunday, June 9, times vary

The Invisible Theatre’s Going It Alone highlights local playwrights and their monologues on stage. There will be 11 monologues performed, ranging over different themes. The Thursday and Friday shows are at 7:30 p.m. and the Saturday and Sunday shows are at 2 p.m. General admission in $30.

Cool Summer Nights

  • Where: Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, 2021 N. Kinney Rd.
  • When: Until Saturday, Aug. 24 at 4:30 – 9 p.m.

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum’s Cool Summer Nights also offers an opportunity to venture out to the museum when it’s cooler outside. Each week will be themed to different educational topics such as monsoons and reptiles. Tickets for general admission are $29.95 although children go in for $19.95. Native Americans with ID or CIB and children under the age of 2 have free admission. There are discounts available such as $2 off for seniors ages 65 and older and military with ID.

The Switch! Live

  • Where: Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St.
  • When: Monday, June 17 at 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

The Switch! is an interactive comedy show in which the audience members send in topics for the comedians to incorporate into the show. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Summer Night Market

  • Where: MSA Annex, 267 S. Avenida del Convento
  • When: Fourth Fridays from until September at 6-10 p.m.

The Summer Night Market is a free event for the community. The dates scheduled are June 28, July 26, August 30 and September 27. Bar Cannex will be open and serving drinks while DJ Herm will be spinning tracks. Be sure to bring some fun money to spend as you browse through the booths of over 60 vendors.

Wig! A Drag Variety Show

  • Where: R Bar, 350 E. Congress St.
  • When: Monday, June 10 at 10 p.m.

The R Bar, which is tucked in next to the Rialto Theatre, will become a stage for seven Arizona-based performers for a variety show titled Wig!. The featured drag performers are Iona Hoya, Ash Wednesday, Dantesmé, The Vamp Natalia, Erick Shunn, Abominatia Gainstgod and Lavender Blaze. Wig! is a free show.

Spinnin’ Wheels

  • Where: MSA Annex, 267 S. Avenida del Convento
  • When: Saturday, June 15 at 7-10 p.m.

Spinnin’ Wheels is a roller disco experience outdoors in the MSA Annex. It is presented by Flam Chen, the Annex and DJ Herm and it’s open to all ages, $10 admission. People must bring their own rollerskates.
