'Celebration of All Things S-cuk Son' marks 249-plus years of Tucson history

The 249th Celebration of All Things S-cuk Son/Tucson will take place Saturday evening at the Presidio Museum in Downtown.

The event, presented by the Tucson-Pima Historical Commission, recognizes the anniversary of the founding of modern Tucson — when the Spanish set up a fort near the Santa Cruz River in 1775.

Starting at 6 p.m., Mariachi Estrella Juvenil will take the stage. The performance will be followed by a welcome and blessing at 6:45 p.m. The Kolencia Oficio Achalim Pascua Yaqui deer dancers will perform at 7 p.m.

Attendees will not be permitted to photograph or record the dancers, under Yaqui customs.

The program continues with the Food Heroes Awards at 8 p.m., which will be followed by a special announcement by the Buffalo Soldiers: Southern Arizona Chapter. At 8:30 p.m., there will be a Presidio Garrison musket demonstration plus live music at 8:45 p.m. by Kevin Pakulis and Friends.

There will be free eegees on site as well as tacos and fry bread for sale plus over 20 local associations and organization present such as the Old Pascua Museum and Yaqui Cultural Center, Fort Lowell Cavalry and more.

Tucson’s “birthday” — recognized as Founder’s Day — is August 20. That was the day in 1775 when the site of el Presidio of San Agustín del Tucson was picked out by a detachment of Spanish troops led by Don Hugo O’Conor, an Irish-born Spanish soldier who was a military governor of northern Mexico.

The 249th Celebration of All Things S-cuk Son/Tucson is a free, family-friendly event. It will be Saturday, Aug. 17, from 6-10 p.m. at Presidio San Agustin del Tucson Museum, 196 N. Court Ave.
